Blur screenshots for privacy

Keep the reassurance of a screenshot without exposing what is on the screen.

Blur lets you confirm somebody was working without reading their screen. For a lot of organizations it is the right compromise.

Where to set it

Settings → Desktop App Settings → Screenshots → Blur intensity. Four choices:

  • Off: the screen as it was. Every word readable.
  • Light: small text becomes unreadable, while layout and colours stay obvious.
  • Medium: you can tell a code editor from a spreadsheet from a video, and little else.
  • Heavy: shapes and colours only.

The important part

Blur is applied on the member's own machine before the image is uploaded. The sharp version never leaves their computer and never reaches our servers. This is not a display filter that an administrator could switch off to reveal the original. The detail is gone at source.

Choosing a level

  • Work involving client data, health records, legal documents or credentials: medium or heavy.
  • General office work where you want a sense of what is on screen: light.
  • Off only where there is a specific reason and the team knows.

It applies from now on

Changing the level affects screenshots taken afterwards. Existing images keep whatever blur they were captured with, because the original was never stored and there is nothing to re-blur.

If blur is not enough

Then screenshots may be the wrong tool. Activity levels and the Apps & URLs report tell you a great deal about how time was spent with no images at all. Turning screenshots off entirely is a legitimate choice, not a failure.
