Track time from the desktop app

The tracker screen, the tray, the keyboard shortcuts, and the banners that tell you something needs attention.

The tracker is the app's home screen: a clock, a project and task picker, a start and stop button, and today's progress.

Starting and stopping

Choose the project, and the task if your organization requires one, then press start. The clock begins immediately and keeps counting whether or not you are online.

Press stop when you finish. To switch to different work, stop and start again instead of changing the project mid-session. That produces two clean entries instead of one entry filed under the wrong project.

It lives in the tray

Closing the window does not stop the timer. The app stays in the system tray or menu bar, still counting. Use the tray icon to see the running total and to stop it without reopening the window. Quit from the tray menu when you want it to exit.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Ctrl+Alt+S, or Cmd+Option+S on macOS: start or stop the timer. This one works even when the app is not focused, so you can start tracking without leaving what you are doing.
  • Alt+T: go to the tracker.
  • Alt+R: go to reports.
  • Alt+,: open settings.
  • Alt+L: open the sync log.
  • Alt+K: show all shortcuts.

Today's progress

The tracker shows how much you have recorded today, measured in your organization's timezone and not your computer's. That is why the counter can reset at what looks like an odd hour if you work across timezones.

The banners

  • Idle: you have stopped touching the keyboard and mouse. What happens next depends on your organization's setting.
  • Daily limit: you are approaching the maximum hours your organization allows in a day. It is a warning, not a cut-off.
  • Clock warning: your computer's clock disagrees noticeably with the server's. Fix the system clock, because entries recorded against a wrong clock land on the wrong day.

The sync line at the bottom

It tells you the truth about your connection: synced, offline and saving locally, or recovering. It is the first place to look if hours are not appearing in the browser.
